Our Premier Record of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

At first glance, this work may look more like a difficult university examination than a new popular music record by an artist who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international pop icon. Divided into four separate movements and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged work that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, often through the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—is launched heavenward here, supported by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast roll call of collaborators. Its sheer ambition alone renders the work of contemporary artists look quite laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that this album succeeds in escape overly intellectual posturing feels almost a miracle, and sole credit belonging to the artist. While this is not her first project to alchemize the past and modern styles, the ambitions are much greater here, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. What really elevates her fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, is a core sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a captivating sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. When she's breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be alongside her through the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly during the stunning Italian ballad about Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, and we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string crescendo thuds down like cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts into the frenetic track driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener never exactly know—nor want to know—what it is going next."

Almost each track ends in a totally different place than how it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into electronic cacophony. Another, a song echoing her earlier rhythmic style starts off moody and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to soften the song's rough corners.

The Bridge Between Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of Lux is straddling the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is no surprise that it has become the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. One track performed entirely in English swells on a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious hooks while it spins skyward. That feat is echoed on another expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes like a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing carry a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own built-in ridiculousness. It is an abundant well of buried gems that takes time to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast where the characters at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
