As bewildering as it is to observe the president try to upend the old idea of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed over the years as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of compassion into a figure of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Savior from my childhood, since in theory the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense about him since they are non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Finest of Us
